“Sense perception, according to the French philosopher Rene Descartes, is “neither a seeing, nor a touching, nor an imagining. Rather it is an inspection on the part of the mind alone.” The idea that perception and experience are functions of the mind and not the body is upended by a book like Jody Kirk’s ‘Today We Dance’. In Kirk’s images, the body is not at all subservient to the mind. Rather, the body is a vehicle for experience. It is a conduit for the ways we perceive the world and the ways we live - viscerally, almost violently - attuned to and consumed by our relationships and connections to those around us”.
