About this project: Evergreen Valley is an ongoing series of photographic works created in Bournemouth. In the early 19th century, hundreds of pine trees were planted on the heathland that is the town, with the aim of creating an artificial health resort based on the widespread belief that pine-scented air and seawater had great medical benefits. Although the legitimacy of these health claims is tenuous, I have often found them undeniably compelling. In the four years that I lived in the area, I forest-bathed (shinrin-yoku) and observed the way the light played across the swathes of tree canopies as often as I could. It felt truly healing.
This body of work is an ode to those trees, the light, and the sea that drew so many to Bournemouth.
